What Is Gold-plated Brass Jewelry?

Brass is a staple in the jewelry-making world. It is forged out of copper and zinc, and the metal alloy is strong, durable, its natural luster makes it the most unique and common metal for jewelry-making. The one downside is that brass isn’t hypoallergenic, and can cause allergic reactions, hence the development of the gold-plated variants.

Gold-plated brass jewelry means that a layer of gold is applied to the brass metal. Thanks to the design of the gold-plated brass, these luxe pieces are affordable and hypoallergenic, you can easily afford a 14k or 18k gold-plated brass piece at TTT jewelry. What Is Gold-plated Sterling Silver Jewelry?

Gold-plated sterling silver jewelry is made with a layer of gold layer over the sterling silver. Gold-plating slows down silver jewelry’s normal tarnishing rate, the extra layer of tarnish-resistant gold protects the silver from oxidation.

Covering silver objects with gold completely also creates a product called Gold Vermeil (a product only qualifies as vermeil if the base metal is silver or sterling silver). Vermeil applies only to plated pieces with a minimum of 10k gold with a 2.5-micron thickness. At TTT, our gold vermeil pieces use 14k gold, 18k gold, or rose gold plating that is 2.5-3.0 microns thick.

Our 18k gold-plated sterling silver necklaces and sterling silver bracelets look like and last like solid yellow gold but without the price tag. You can also find our playful sterling silver earrings with rose gold-plating for a chicer look. Discover TTT’s sterling silver jewelry in yellow gold, rose gold, or platinum plating.

Gold is the most popular metal choice for fashion necklaces, pendants, bracelets, earrings, and rings. There are three things to consider when choosing gold. First, which color of gold (yellow or white). Second, which karat (9K, 14K, 18K, 24K).

Each karat contains a different amount of pure gold, which then impacts the weight and price of that jewelry. For example:

9kt gold contains 37.5% pure gold

14kt gold contains 58.5% pure gold

18kt gold contains 75% pure gold

24kt gold contains 100% pure gold (also called pure gold or 100 percent gold).

Lastly, when a material is titled ‘gold-plated’ this does not mean that the material is 100% made of pure gold, it is made up of layers of gold plating, which makes your jewelry last longer and shines. Our Gold-plated jewelry has a thick layer of 18K gold plating over a base of Sterling Silver, Brass, and Stainless Steel.

18K gold is TTT’s most sought-after choice striking a great balance between color, weight, and purity. Find gold plated pieces in our Sterling Silver Collection.

Platinum is one of the rarest metals. It is pure and naturally white, ensuring its color will never fade. Unlike white gold that needs to be alloyed with other white metals to mask its yellow color, platinum jewelry is either 90% or 95% pure platinum. Platinum is a very heavy and dense metal, so platinum jewelry will feel much heavier than 18kt gold jewelry. It is hard-wearing and resistant to tarnishing which makes it perfect for everyday wear.

Our platinum-plated jewelry has a thick layer of rhodium (platinum family metal) plating over a base of Sterling Silver, Brass, and Stainless Steel to create a harder surface with a brighter shine. Find platinum-plated pieces in our Sterling Silver Collection.

Sterling Silver contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals and is usually stamped as 925. Sterling Silver can range from bright white to grayish white, and can have a matte or shiny finish. Sterling Silver is a popular metal for use in jewelry such as necklaces, pendants, bracelets, earrings, and fashion rings. It has an alluring color and luster and can make for admirable but very affordable jewelry that can stand the test of time. Titanium is the hardest natural metal in the world. It is a lustrous transition metal with a silver color. Pure titanium is also 100% hypoallergenic, which means that it is safe for anyone to wear as it will not react to your skin.

Stainless Steel a durable and nearly indestructible form of alloy, stainless steel jewelry is a quickly growing style of jewelry to wear. It is particularly popular in men’s necklaces, bracelets, wedding bands, and fashion rings. TTT women’s stainless steel jewelry is minimalist, versatile, and effortless stack-ability for everyday wear, featuring the latest styles and trends of women’s stainless steel necklaces, bracelets, bands, fashion rings.

Matching Jewelry and Skin Tone

We all know, certain skin tones look good with certain metals and gemstones, knowing your skin tone helps you to find the perfect pieces of jewelry that look best on you.

Matching Metal and Skin Tone

Yellow gold, copper, and brass jewelry are classic metal choices and will suit everyone. They look particularly impressive in warm tones.

White gold, silver, and platinum flatter those with cool tones and pair well with vibrant stones in purple, pink, deep reds, and blues.

(If you have particularly sensitive skin, platinum is a great choice for its hypoallergenic and non-reactive)

If you have a neutral tone, then you’re in luck! Both white and yellow metals will suit you perfectly!

What About Rose Gold?

Rose gold has become a more popular choice for its soft pink tone complements both cool and warm skin tones. It is feminine, playful, and elegant. Rose gold complements more than just skin tones—it looks dazzling with Cubic Zirconias, gemstones, or pearls. For cool skin tones, think reds, blues, purples, and greens.

Ideal stones include topaz, blue sapphire, turquoise, tanzanite, aquamarine, amethyst, ruby, garnet, emerald, tourmaline, and opal.

For warm skin tones, reach out for earthy colors – oranges, yellows, and browns.

Ideal stones include citrine, agate, alexandrite, peridot, imperial topaz, and yellow zircon.

For neutral skin tones, you could have the best of both worlds.

Since you are a mix of both, you have free reign to choose any gemstones, as all of them will look flattering on you.

Ring Settings 101

1. Prong Setting

Prong Setting features prongs that cling subtly to the edges of the center stone, holding it securely in place. Most of our styles have 3-prong, 4-prong, or 6-prong settings, which allow lots of light to come in make your cubic zirconia shimmer and shine. The more prongs the setting has, the more secure your cubic zirconia will be, but less light will enter the stone so it won’t be quite as dazzling.

2. Bezel Setting

Bezel setting is the most secure ring setting, featuring a metal strip that wraps around the periphery of the CZ gems. This allows your CZ to remain extremely safe from damage, which is why this setting is often recommended for active women. Bezel setting is very sleek and modern looking, and its blend of elegance and practicality is the perfect balance for a woman on the go.

3. Pave Setting

Pave Setting gives you beautiful CZ-encrusted looks by drilling holes into the metal and embedding tiny CZs into the slots, keeping them secure by placing metal prongs or beads in between the CZ stones. Our pave settings hold the tiny stones in place, creating a dazzling line paved with cubic zirconia that elevates the center stone and helps your ring sparkle from several angles.

4. Halo Setting

Our halo settings involve an outline of CZ stones that hugs the edges of your center stone. They can be delicate or dramatic but will always add extra shine and intrigue to your ring. This is a great, affordable option for women who want more dazzle or want to make their CZ gemstone appear larger. Halo setting holds your center stone in place and your side stones as well.

5. Channel Setting

Channel Setting creates a smooth channel of CZs placed side by side in the band of your ring. Because this setting doesn’t use prongs and embeds the cubic zirconia stones in individual grooves within the band, it’s very secure and works well for active lifestyles. Though it serves to enhance the center stone and add shine like pave, the channel setting has a bolder, more distinct look that plays with the contrast of shape and straight lines.

6. Bar Setting

Bar settings involve a series of two or more thin vertical bars of metal that sit between each stone and secure them firmly in place, allowing ample light to pass through the stones. Bar setting protects the sides of each stone’s girdle, so it can be applied around some or all of the ring. The surface of your ring will be smooth and unobtrusive—perfect for active wearers. The bar setting brings a contemporary twist to a classic ring.

7. Tension Setting

Tension setting is a design in which the compression-spring pressure of the band holds the stone firmly in place, allowing maximum light into the stone and giving your ring a very modern and impressive look. The minimal interference of metal can give the impression the stone is “floating”. Only extremely hard stones can withstand the required pressure to keep them in place securely.
